Media: Main NEA Update

 Main NEA update - 14th May 2020

I have completed 3 of my adverts on Adobe Premier Pro.

Unfortunately, I was unable to complete all 4 adverts for today’s deadline. When I filmed the 3 adverts it was still in lockdown, which meant that I could only film with those in my household and I needed a couple of friends to act for my 4th one, which was impossible at the time. I was planning to include a variety of shots for this, including an establishing shot, close-up shot, medium shot and an extreme close-up shot. I have completed a storyboard for this advert with details of shots which I was planning to use etc.

The idea I had for the advert I was unable to complete it that the 'everyman' was supposed to be on FaceTime with a friend chatting about how there is not much on the TV at the moment (Establishing shot and a close-up shot of the laptop with the friend on FaceTime, lasting a total of 5 seconds) and shortly after that there is an ambiguous close shot of the everyman frowning whilst something odd is occurring on the screen in front of them (1 second). This will then reveal a medium shot of the laptop screen again, but instead of the friend who was originally on FaceTime, the 'creepy girl' is there (3 second shot), there is then a 3 second extreme close-up shot of the everyman speaking the dialogue "Hold on, I think my internet connection has gone off", as if they are presuming that the reason why their friend has morphed into the creepy girl is because of her bad internet connection. This is where the advert ends with a 3 second appearance of the title page with the spoken VoiceOver motto "Asylum of Terror, bringing horror to life".

Overall, I am pleased that I managed to complete 3 adverts, but I definitely think I could've done a lot better if the circumstances of filming were different. I would've preferred to have had more actors in my productions but unfortunately I only had my family to be actors, some of which didn't want to be in the production. The initial idea I had for my adverts was that the everyman would be a person between the ages of about 16-25 to reflect the target demographic of AOT, however I unfortunately only had my mum available to act in my production on the day I planned to film. The Covid lockdown circumstances altered a few of my plans for my adverts, but I am happy that I was at least able to complete 3 of them.

MEDIA: Kuleshov Experiment

Kuleshov and Eisenstein experimented with cut up footage and how, depending on the sequence, it would get different responses from the audience - demonstrating that context is all important.  This technique has been used by political film makers for propaganda purposes.   This technique established the role cutaways have on creating meanings and representations.  In this task: the clip that I duplicated for each scenario was of one of my fellow classmates laughing. The 3 different scenarios I used to change the meaning and representation of the laughing clip were: tripping over, crying because of the passing of a pet fish and taking selfies.

MEDIA: Continuity Task

'Change Of Mind' For this task, we were asked to make a short video where somebody walks from outside towards the school building, checks their timetable and changes their mind before going back away from school. During the making of this short video, I thought about: The need for a range of shots, camera angles, the use of titling to give context, involving a form of colour correction (B&W filter) and the importance of following the rules of continuity. The character and narrative I considered for this task was a Sixth Form student with a 'can't be bothered' attitude going to school, only to discover that she had a re-sit maths lesson which was the only reason she needed to turn around and go home.

MEDIA: Advertising Standards Authority

The ASA ensures that advertisements across UK media stick to the advertising codes, which are: Ads must not mislead. Claims must be supported with evidence. Advertisers should deal honestly and truthfully with consumers.  Ads shouldn't offend.  The role of regulation: A body who isn't part of the government but will follow their guidance/ laws. There is a regulator for TV and radio (Ofcom), newspapers and magazines (Ipso), for schools (Ofsted).  Sometimes regulators deal with/ investigate complaints from the public. Sometimes they can issue fines, bans or warnings.  I will ensure that I comply to the ASA codes and regulations because I will be direct about what I am trying to sell to the consumer without misleading. I will do this by writing a title of the name of the channel, the release date and where you can find the channel. I will ensure that I do not offend the consumers by ensuring that there are no inappropriate jokes or mocking of any insecurities etc,...
