Initial ideas- 

Name of channel: Asylum Of Terror 

Genre: Horror

Overview of my idea: Each advertisement will contain a generic looking clown character as a running theme throughout them all for a recogniseable way of showing that they're all advertisements for the same channel. Each of my 4 adverts will be a character doing just average everyday activities such as watching TV, on a walk etc, and the clown always finding a way to haunt them. I shall use 4 different phrases at the end of each advert to emphasise the idea that Asylum Of Terror (AOT) is a proper horror channel which will genuinely scare its audience. I'm thinking that these phrases will be: "Be afraid, AOT is looking for you.", "AOT, bringing horror to your home", "Hello, you have entered the Asylum Of Terror." and "Lucy is watching too much AOT.". Each of these phrases will match what is happening in each advertisement. 

How my idea will fit the requirements of the brief: 

  • My 4 advertisements will not be too frightening, they may even have some light hearted elements in them. Therefore, the content will be suitable to be aired at any time of the day on commercial TV.
  • Each of my 4 adverts will be 15 seconds long. So they will be short, but long enough to put the idea that there is going to be a new horror channel on the television across. 
  • My horror channel will fit the client target audience (16-25-year-old fans of the horror genre) because I will be using appliances such as laptops, smartphones and TV's in my advertisements; this would attract an audience of younger generations because it shows that my horror channel is fresh and modern compared to other channels which may be have more dated content. Furthermore, my channel will fit the target audience because the 'ordinary' character in my advertisements will be between 16 and 18 years old, emphasising that the channel is aimed at the younger generation of people. 
How I will use media language:

  • In my productions, I will use a range of camera shots, distances, angles and movement to build tension in my adverts and also to show the settings/ contexts of my advertisements.
  • I will edit the footage of my advertisements by adding special effects, ie glitches across the screen. I will play around with the filters on Premier Pro to make the lighting more low-key to fit the horror genre and I'll edit my footage to make some subtle jump scares to shock and surprise the audience.  
  • I will include a voiceover of the creepy girl saying the phrases, for example "Be afraid, AOT is looking for you." and I'll most likely apply a voice effect so the voice matches the character. I will also add sound effects, such as eery background noises to build tension and emphasise the horror genre. Finally, I'll most likely use some form of diegetic dialogue, such as a phone call/ FaceTime call. 
  • In terms of mise-en-scene, I will include a costume of a creepy girl, dressed in white with a pale face, some low-key lighting, different locations (living room, bedroom and out on a walk) and a small variety of props (smartphone, laptop, TV)
  • I will have 2 characters representing two different social groups: A creepy looking stalker girl and an ordinary working class teenager who is just doing average day-to-day activities. 
  • I'll use some form of titling/ written text in each advertisement; including the channel's name, launch date and how you can access the channel. 
  • Finally, in my advertisements I will adhere to the rules of ASA (Advertising Standards Authority) which is following and sticking to the basic advertising codes: being responsible, must not mislead or offend, be direct with the point you're putting across, must be unique and make the audience feel motivated to try out whatever it is you're selling. 
What I need to practice in order to achieve my ideas:
  • Editing practice: to put enough information across in a short space of time and also to create suspense. 
  • Sound management practice: ensure that all of my elements of sound are balanced out/ equalised well and also practice applying voiceover to my productions in Premier Pro. 
  • Camera techniques practice: using a range of different shots, angles and movements.
  • Footage gathering practice: ensuring that I take a few shots of the same moment, not just one, in order to get my desired footage and to piece together the best bits of footage that I get when out filming.

MEDIA: Kuleshov Experiment

Kuleshov and Eisenstein experimented with cut up footage and how, depending on the sequence, it would get different responses from the audience - demonstrating that context is all important.  This technique has been used by political film makers for propaganda purposes.   This technique established the role cutaways have on creating meanings and representations.  In this task: the clip that I duplicated for each scenario was of one of my fellow classmates laughing. The 3 different scenarios I used to change the meaning and representation of the laughing clip were: tripping over, crying because of the passing of a pet fish and taking selfies. 

MEDIA: Continuity Task

'Change Of Mind' For this task, we were asked to make a short video where somebody walks from outside towards the school building, checks their timetable and changes their mind before going back away from school. During the making of this short video, I thought about: The need for a range of shots, camera angles, the use of titling to give context, involving a form of colour correction (B&W filter) and the importance of following the rules of continuity. The character and narrative I considered for this task was a Sixth Form student with a 'can't be bothered' attitude going to school, only to discover that she had a re-sit maths lesson which was the only reason she needed to turn around and go home.   

MEDIA: Advertising Standards Authority

 The ASA ensures that advertisements across UK media stick to the advertising codes, which are: Ads must not mislead. Claims must be supported with evidence. Advertisers should deal honestly and truthfully with consumers.  Ads shouldn't offend.  The role of regulation: A body who isn't part of the government but will follow their guidance/ laws. There is a regulator for TV and radio (Ofcom), newspapers and magazines (Ipso), for schools (Ofsted).  Sometimes regulators deal with/ investigate complaints from the public. Sometimes they can issue fines, bans or warnings.  I will ensure that I comply to the ASA codes and regulations because I will be direct about what I am trying to sell to the consumer without misleading. I will do this by writing a title of the name of the channel, the release date and where you can find the channel. I will ensure that I do not offend the consumers by ensuring that there are no inappropriate jokes or mocking of any insecurities etc,...
