MEDIA: Main NEA Statement of Intent

 My TV adverts for a new horror channel called ‘Asylum of Terror’ will aim to create a brand identity that is unique and different to other horror channels. I aim to almost make a mockery of clique horror channels and enforce the idea that most people don’t actually find them scary because they’ve seen the same thing many times before. My channel will include fresh and modern content which will appeal to a younger audience, my target audience is 16-30-year-old individuals who enjoy horror. 

 

All 4 of my adverts will include a generic looking ‘creepy girl’ to link each advert together. Each of my adverts will consist of somebody doing an everyday type of activity and the ‘creepy girl’ will always find a way to try and haunt them, but the person is never fazed by him, adding some humour and irony to my adverts. The sense of humour within my adverts will fit the requirements of the brief because it will allow them to be aired at any time of the day on commercial TV. The girl will represent clique horror channels/ films which don’t actually scare its viewers anymore because the general idea of a dark, creepy girl has been overused in horror over the years – as well as other generic characters such as clowns and zombies.

 

My characters will include 2 individuals from different social groups. A creepy stalker girl, which will be represented as a ‘generic’ horror movie character, to the point where it isn’t scary anymore. I aim to show that Asylum of Terror is a different outlook on horror than the ordinary perception of it. My other character will be a teenage boy/ girl, representing AOT’s target audience (16-30-year olds) and this character will also show that most people are fed up with the same old predictable horror conventions to the point where they’re not as enjoyable or scary anymore, hence the character being unphased by the generic looking creepy girl. 

 

I will aim to use media language in a way that includes intertextual references to something from the Asylum of Terror channel. In one of the adverts the teenage character will be watching something from Asylum of Horror on their TV, at this point they are shaking with fear. Then, the creepy girl walks in attempting to frighten the teenager even further. I’ll do this by filming about 5 seconds of content that I think would be on the AOT channel, then I’ll upload it to YouTube or put it on a memory stick and the teenage character shall be able watch that footage to watch on the TV. I will aim to recreate some of the media language conventions of the horror genre such as the use of low-key lighting, the idea of an ‘everyman’ (the teenage character), I will use a jump scare when the person who the teenage character is talking to on FaceTime suddenly turns into the creepy girl. When filming outside, I’ll attempt to use pathetic fallacy of cloudy skies and rain, depending on the weather when I get round to filming. I will use close up shots and I’ll also use dark coloured clothes/ costumes to add to the sense of horror. 

 

Some of the conventions of TV adverts that I will use are: including the name, release date and producer of my channel in titling, I will promote the benefits of my TV channel by amplifying on the idea that AOT is different to anything that has been done before, I’ll ensure that my channel is clearly targeted to my TA, I will ensure that my adverts are memorable to convince the viewers to look into AOT and finally my adverts will be creative and original. The 4 adverts will work well together to create a coherent brand identity because they’re all quite similar in context: a creepy stalker girl attempting to frighten a teenager but not succeeding. All that’ll differ in each advert is the setting and scenario. 

 

My vision will suit the target audience and scheduled time (9:30pm on Friday nights) because the channel isn’t appropriate for young children; nor very accessible to those - perhaps of the older generation - who might prefer the classic horrors and not want to be introduced to a modern twist of the genre. 

 

I will adhere to the ASA guidelines because I’ll be direct about what I am trying to sell to the consumer without misleading. I’ll do this by using titling, showing the name, the release date and where you can find the channel. I’ll ensure that I do not offend the consumers by ensuring that there are no inappropriate jokes or mocking of any insecurities etc, my advertisements will be appropriate for audiences of all ages, races, ethnicities, classes, sexes and sexual orientations. I will also deal honestly and truthfully with my consumers by truthfully portraying what the aim of my channel will be without deceiving, I would hope that when the consumers reach my channel, they'll feel happy with the way the channel was advertised, therefore they won't feel like they've been deceived or lied to. 

 

I believe that these adverts will be effective because they’ll persuade a younger audience to look into AOT if they’ve had enough of watching the same old ideas being reinforced in horror films, or if they crave a fresh and modern outlook on horror. My adverts will also be very different to other horror ads because it is not actually scary, it’s ironically more of a humorous mockery of classic horror ideas – this will ensure that they’re memorable and stick in the viewers’ minds.

Kuleshov and Eisenstein experimented with cut up footage and how, depending on the sequence, it would get different responses from the audience - demonstrating that context is all important.  This technique has been used by political film makers for propaganda purposes.   This technique established the role cutaways have on creating meanings and representations.  In this task: the clip that I duplicated for each scenario was of one of my fellow classmates laughing. The 3 different scenarios I used to change the meaning and representation of the laughing clip were: tripping over, crying because of the passing of a pet fish and taking selfies. 

MEDIA: Continuity Task

'Change Of Mind' For this task, we were asked to make a short video where somebody walks from outside towards the school building, checks their timetable and changes their mind before going back away from school. During the making of this short video, I thought about: The need for a range of shots, camera angles, the use of titling to give context, involving a form of colour correction (B&W filter) and the importance of following the rules of continuity. The character and narrative I considered for this task was a Sixth Form student with a 'can't be bothered' attitude going to school, only to discover that she had a re-sit maths lesson which was the only reason she needed to turn around and go home.   

MEDIA: Advertising Standards Authority

 The ASA ensures that advertisements across UK media stick to the advertising codes, which are: Ads must not mislead. Claims must be supported with evidence. Advertisers should deal honestly and truthfully with consumers.  Ads shouldn't offend.  The role of regulation: A body who isn't part of the government but will follow their guidance/ laws. There is a regulator for TV and radio (Ofcom), newspapers and magazines (Ipso), for schools (Ofsted).  Sometimes regulators deal with/ investigate complaints from the public. Sometimes they can issue fines, bans or warnings.  I will ensure that I comply to the ASA codes and regulations because I will be direct about what I am trying to sell to the consumer without misleading. I will do this by writing a title of the name of the channel, the release date and where you can find the channel.
